Getting Rid of Ingrowing Hairs

During April us girls need to start thinking about preparing our skin for the Summer that is fast approaching.......hopefully! Here are some tips on 'Ingrowing Hairs' and what you can do.

Summer legs on beachOne of the most common questions our therapists get asked in the salon is 'how do I get rid of ingrowing hairs?' Ingrowing hairs can be caused by friction, dry skin and a build up of dead skin cells on the epidermis. If the skin is not exfoliated the dead skin can trap hairs between the dermal layers which can cause itching, redness and sometimes spots.

"exfoliate - to remove the dead skin and free the offending hair and to moisturize - to keep the skin young and supple"

So, the best things we can do to prevent this from happening are to exfoliate - to remove the dead skin and free the offending hair and to moisturize - to keep the skin young and supple. Body brushing is a cheap and effective way of exfoliating. Brush your skin in a light, upward motion (this has the added bonus of improving your circulation). Repeat as necessary throughout the week, then apply moisturizer. ESPA have a fantastic body brush for £11.50. We have found our clients get excellent results from MD Formulations face and body scrub £26, which contains glycolic acid to increase the cell renewal of your skin - its dual action (i.e. the gritty cream coupled with the glycolic acid) give a smooth radiant skin.

For a more luxurious feel, the ESPA salt scrubs smell delicious and there is no need to moisturize afterwards as the oil content does this as you exfoliate. This is available in invigorating, relaxing and detoxifying blends at £26.50.

An alternative is the ESPA body polish which is ideal for stubborn hair, dry knees and ankles and has a refreshing spearmint aroma at £27.

Follow any of these treatment with the ESPA essential body lotion £20.50 with a subtle aroma of rose and rose geranium or MD Formulations Hand and Body Lotion, which is fragrance free and contains the very effective glycolic acid.

By exfoliating and moisturizing 2/3 times a week you can expect to reduce ingrowing hairs whilst giving your skin a healthy bloom and a soft, supple feel. Perfect for those gorgeous floral dresses that are hitting the shops! You can also think about having an exfoliating treatment in the salon - a blissful body care or a salt scrub - a lovely treat for you and your skin.
